| Abstract: | The aim of the Masters Thesis is to analyze the role of the United Nations in conflict prevention and resolution. The theoretical framework lists a set of tools that should be followed in order to achieve a success in UN peacekeeping operations. Based on the list of the tools the Masters Thesis continues with two case studies. The case study of Former Yugoslavia and its peacekeeping operation UNPROFOR is considered to be one of the biggest failures of the UN peacekeeping. In contrary, the case study of Sierra Leoneans peacekeeping operation UNAMSIL then represents a successful UN peacekeeping operation. The Masters Thesis is concluded by a comparative analysis of these two case studies which evaluates the development and the implementation of these tools in each of the case studies. The analysis brings the answer to the research question which asks why some UN peacekeeping operations are successful whereas others completely fail. |

| Abstract: | Cílem této diplomové práce je analyzovat úlohu Organizace spojených národů při předcházení a řešení mezinárodních konfliktů. V teoretickém rámci je uveden seznam nástrojů, které by měly být použity k dosažení úspěchu v mírových operacích OSN. Na základě tohoto seznamu nástrojů pokračuje diplomová práce dvěma případovými studiemi. Případová studie bývalé Jugoslávie a její mírové operace UNPROFOR je považována za jednu z největších neúspěchů v mírových operacích OSN. Naopak, případová studie mírového operace Sierry Leone, UNAMSIL, představuje úspěšnou mírovou operaci OSN. Diplomová práce je zakončena komparativní analýzou těchto dvou případových studií, která vyhodnocuje vývoj a implementaci těchto nástrojů v každé z těchto případových studií. Tato komparativní analýza přináší odpověď na výzkumnou otázku, která se ptá, proč některé mírové operace OSN jsou úspěšné, zatímco jiné zcela selhávají. |
