Abstract: | The global structure of shadow economies experiences high levels of diversity in terms of the size of shadow economies and their behavior across different countries. Research has proven there to be trends in the sizes of shadow economies in relation to economic development and income level classifications. The thesis expands upon these findings and deals with the assessment of trends in behavior through convergence tests. The convergence methodology is drawn from Phillips and Sul’s (2007) log t regression convergence analysis and club convergence testing procedures. The convergence tests are applied to twenty-five yearly panel observations of shadow economic sizes as a percentage of GDP for 158 countries; the data is drawn from Medina and Schneider (2018). The convergence analysis shows evidence of club convergence behavior within shadow economies and yields the formation of five convergent clubs. Further observational analyses and convergence strength tests are carried out on the five clubs. In order to understand the differences in behavior of each club, an ordinal logit regression based on the methodology used by Bartkowska and Riedl (2009) is applied. The ordered logit model tests the effects of initial conditions in institutional and governmental variables (political stability, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law and corruption control) on club membership. The ordered logit model finds corruption control to be statistically significant in explaining club membership at the 5% level. The thesis concludes the research with a discussion of the results and their policy implications. |

Abstract: | Globální struktura stínových ekonomik je silně diverzifikovaná, a to zejména co se týče velikosti a chování těchto ekonomik v jednotlivých zemích světa. Logistická regrese testuje dopad počátečních podmínek institucionálních proměnných a proměnných orgánů státní správy (politická stabilita, efektivita vlády, kvalita regulace, právo a potírání korupce) na členství zemí v konvergenčních klubech. |
