This Master´s thesis deals with the integration of ESG factors in the insurance sector. It focuses mainly on the environmental pillar, concerning the commitment to achieve zero net emissions by 2050. In the introductory part, the concepts of sustainable finance, ESG pillars, and the concept of double materiality, which is relevant to recent European legislation, are introduced. The ESG regulatory framework chapter includes an analysis of the Solvency II Directive and the new ESG standards that will be implemented by large insurance companies in the coming period. Furthermore, the thesis focuses on the comparison between the Allianz Group and Swiss Re sustainability reports for 2022. In the last part, a case study on VIG Zajišťovna, a. s., is conducted, examining the current state of reporting, the underwriting process, and investment management. A sub-objective of the case study is to identify steps towards the full integration of ESG factors into the reinsurance company's strategy.
