Abstract: | The weak evidence effect (Fernbach et al., 2011) causing a person to decrease his confidence in a certain statement if he is presented with weak evidence supporting the statement. This master’s thesis utilized a laboratory experiment in order to replicate and explain some of the mechanisms and causes of the weak evidence effect. The results of a mixed-effects model regression analysis suggest the existence of weak evidence effect, however, contrary to Fernbach et al., reject the hypothesis that the effect is caused by neglect of alternative causes. Another part of the research shows a negative causal relationship between the strength of the argument and the weak evidence effect and suggests the position of a point of argument strength beyond which the weak evidence effect doesn’t occur. The use of supportive evidence thus can bring the opposite results and therefore it is better to use no evidence, rather than weak evidence in some situations. |
